I used to do T’ai chi, and there are many wonderful looking and feeling movements within the short form; it’s a beautifully flowing and balletic series of movements.
If you put your arms in the position you’d imagine for a violinist or a harpist, you’ll, hopefully, have your arms away from your body. It feels a bit freer. More capable of changing direction. I like the feeling. So I try to do that on the guitar, or when I play the guitar. Try not to be locked.
I say I ‘try’ to do this. I have an image of how I’d like the movements to be, but whenever I see myself on video, the movements look terrible. So that’s why I need my little T’ai chi guitar teacher who knows exactly how I should be doing it.
Unfortunately she doesn’t exist.
