Just resist what you normally do.
Do you play solos that start low and end high?
Start high then.
Start with a barrage of 32nd notes.
Forget all that rubbish about having nowhere to go. That’s where you want to be.
You don’t want to have it all planned out.
Play twice as slow.
Play chords.
Play noises.
Strum a solo.
Play a semitone away from all the chords.
Don’t resolve.
Leave huge gaps.
Play a conversation.
Ignore everybody.
Mess with their minds.
Mess with your mind.
Boldly go where you haven’t gone before.
And use the Force.

Thank you, I have been reading some of your article and that last one “Just resist what you normally do” just hit me in the face. I am, like most of us at some point, trying to play other stuff than my usual licks and tricks and, there you go, I read that short article from you.
So obvious and so true (easier on the paper than in real situation though). I should organise myself and book a one to one lesson with you.
I love your playing and did not realise that you also were a great educator.
